Welcome

foto mateu orfilaWelcome to the website of the Department of Chemistry of the Balearic Islands University (UIB). The department is located in the UIB Campus building, named after one of the pioneering scientists in the world of Toxicology and Medical Chemistry, Mateu J. Bonaventura Orfila i Rotger (1787-1853), a physician and chemist from Menorca, born in Maó and who held the Chemistry Chair of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Paris from 1823 until the arrival of the 1848 revolution.

The department develops its teaching work in the Degree in Chemistry of the Faculty of Sciences and the Master's and Doctorate Degrees in Chemical Science and Technology. The department participates with 18 other Spanish universities in the Interuniversity Masters and Doctorate Degrees in Theoretical Chemistry and Computational Modeling and in the Organic Chemistry Program in the Chemistry-Pharmaceutical industry.

The department includes research groups that work on different aspects of chemistry (Biological Chemistry, Biomedical Chemistry, Supramolecular Chemistry, Synthesis and Asymmetrical Catalysis, Agro-Food Engineering, Automation of Laboratory and Environmental Chemistry) with research projects financed by various public and private institutions.

In the department there is the MAPFRE Occupational Hazard Prevention Chair.
